Your donation has the potential to save lives and improve many lives, and we'll, you're dead so you aren't using those pieces. And for those who are sick with something still being studied, please donate to research! Please. I lost my aunt to ALS, a slow and crippling death. My niece is type 1 diabetic. I don't want these diseases to continue forever. Please, donate after death to better the world.

For things to have gotten so out of control where an School Resource Officer/the cops to be called, then I have questions. This child is six and if there were at least three adults involved, then this situation likely could have been resolved before it came to blows. I'm guessing all adults in this situation had at least 60 pounds on this child.

  • I'm honestly worried about the idea of mandatory organ donation in America. This has a change, albeit slim, of leading to breaking down bodily autonomy. I'm all for legal organ harvest and personally want my organs used if they're healthy enough to save lives when I die, especially if I die early or young. But I don't feel it's right to mandate that others must do the same. This infringes on the debate on bodily autonomy for pregnant women and I could easily see that becoming a dangerous dance politically and medically.

  • It’s really sad what’s going on in schools. I help at a school my mom is a aid for disabled kids and kids who have anger issues plus normal students. What happened a couple weeks ago we had an older teacher get beat up by a 4 year old. And I know that sounds crazy, like really a 4 year old? But this 4 year old threw a chair, a table, scissors at the teachers head and ripped out her hair (the school had to collect the hair as evidence). The teachers are not allowed to touch the child to restrain them because then the teachers can get in trouble and sued for “touching a child” even if it is self defense. The school refuses to stand for our teachers and no longer expel or suspend the students because then the parents come in and threaten the school for “bullying” their kids because “their kids never do anything bad”. So instead of discipline the school just says “mmm maybe they are having a bad day, we have to cater to the kids and reward them for their behavior because the parents will be upset.” It’s sad and I blame the system, the parents for refusing to discipline or even see that their kids have done anything wrong. And it’s a scary environment for these teachers now. I know a high school teacher who got her wrist broken but because she held up her hand as self defense to black the student the parents tried to sue her and the school because he was just having a bad day. Just because I’m having a bad day doesn’t mean I can go out there and abuse people or even assault somebody. We had a 4th grade teacher hospitalized and then she quit because the school refused to stand up for her. Just because the child was having a rough day.

  • My sister was a 5th grader when she got off the bus and tried to enter the house my aunt, uncle, and I were in at the time. My aunt was disabled and my uncle manipulated and brainwashed her into calling the cops on my sister claiming she had no right to be there and wanted her off the property. The cop cuffed my sister and put her in the cop car. He never got my sister's side of it and only listened to my uncle. Eventually they released her after many hours and other family coming to get us to take us home. The whole situation has remained with my sister 20 or so years after. It's crazy what cops will do to kids.

  • Hey Phil! I have an interesting take on the organ donor segment and why it’s actually a problem. My mom, as a US I.C.U. nurse of 20 years has seen 2 instances where being a registered organ donor is an issue. Sometimes, as we all kind of hope, a brain dead patient does “wake up” to a degree when all odds are against them. The thing is, once a patient has been declared dead they are legally owned by the company that comes to harvest and transplant organs. My mom has twice now had to defend patients that were legally declared dead, given up to those harvesting companies, and then woke up and consciously spoken to their families and medical care takers. Each time the patient has eventually, during the legal battle, died and been donated. But the issue is that the company doesn’t care that the patient appears conscious. Each time the company has fought to take the organs, despite apparent consciousness. Since these experiences, my moms has convinced my family to all opt out of registered organ donation and instead written in their will or directed their medical power of attorney about organ donation wishes. Having a legally mandated organ donation registration, without prior consent (as you need to actively remove consent) puts a lot of families in the position where they may have to legally fight for their loved one to stay alive beyond the wishes of said non-consenting organ donator against the organ harvesting teams.

  • The kids arrest isn't heartbreaking. The officer wasn't mean at all. I do however don't think a kid that young should be arrested unless the kid is a danger to themselves or others. which it could of been the officers reasoning. I'm just glad he wasn't White or his life would of been over.

    Richard CouillardRichard CouillardVor 5 Monate
  • There’s a reason why people are so amazed that a six-year-old will be arrested. It’s not common or normal. There are policies in place for when things like this happen. Clearly she was acting out because she was tired or had some other kind of mental or behavioral issues. If you were a kindergartner that wasn’t getting sleep, of course you would throw a tantrum. But counselors and teachers help teach children strategies to self regulate and calm down. It’s called Social and Emotional Learning. At the point where she was arrested in the video it seamed like that had already accomplished that. After the child had calmed down, then you can start talking about consequences for being disruptive, hitting, or mistreating property. 6 year olds are not criminals and should not be treated as such. It is not the public’s, or the officers job to “scare her straight.” She’s a little human who probably just learned how to spell and write her name, color in the lines, and hasn’t learned yet how to play well with others. Edit: Do people not realize that officers are assigned to campuses? Like, no they probably didn’t call him there to arrest her. He was probably already there and had to get involved.

  • Why were the cops called? Are teachers not trained in dealing with children? Why call the police and then get mad at the police for doing what police do? I’ll add something important here; at least this is the case in Oklahoma. Police only arrest for misdemeanor crimes when they occur in their presence or if a citizen wants to press charges. It doesn’t sound like the assault happened in the cops presence, so I’m assuming one of the “victims” expressed the desire to press charges. This would leave the cop pretty stuck making the arrest. Bottom line, someone got their panties in a bunch and called the police. “Charges weren’t pursued” bc the “victim” dropped them after putting this cop in this position and seeing the response to the arrest.

  • I worked for one of the largest organ procurement organizations in the US for 6 months recently, and it was actually their official opinion that an opt-out organ donor registry wouldn't be a good idea. The reasoning was that they felt that some people would feel it was infringing on their bodily freedom somehow (even though they could opt-out) and that it was more meaningful to consciously choose to register as a donor as opposed to being one automatically. They wanted to just focus on educating more people so that any stigmas they may have against organ donation would be dispelled and registration rates would continue to go up.

    Emily B.Emily B.Vor 5 Monate
    • @TKPS Yeah I thought it was a pretty good idea too, but I kind of just deferred to the people who'd been working there longer since I was just an intern. I thought that if you had registered as a donor, your family couldn't go against your wishes after death? Like the outreach people would still ask your family out of respect and hope they agree, but if they say you can't take their organs, they still can go through with it as long as the deceased person made their will known to have it done. Ideally they'd convince family members to agree to it, of course. That was my understanding while working there, at least. How scary for him! I hope he continues to do well with his donated lung and he gets lots of life out of it.

      Emily B.Emily B.Vor 5 Monate
    • Except that's what governments have been doing since dot and people are well meaning but lazy. Not to mention the best donors are those comatose in hospital already that have their machines turned off which reduces the viable organ pool even further. I have a donor card and I think it's a good idea. Family can still stop it, as they can for me. My husband's cousin recently survived a lung transplant and only because fortunately lungs don't have to match too close so there was more chance of him getting them. He was hours from death. I think we need to improve the numbers.

      TKPSTKPSVor 5 Monate
  • I do believe there should be a minimum age to arrest I'm not sure how old the minimum should be because kids vary in maturity between genders, parenting styles and many other factors

    ShadowGardevoirShadowGardevoirVor 5 Monate
    • It's 10 in most countries and here in Australia you can't 'cuff' children. You most certainly can't cart them off without a parent or another representative stand in going with them. I think we've got to remember these are children. If a grown policeman can't handle it, he can get some help or don't bother doing the job.

      TKPSTKPSVor 5 Monate
  • I think a huge problem with organ donation in the US is the stigma that if you register to forfeit you organs upon death, it is stereotyped that medical practitioners will know this fact and decide whether your life is worth saving or your organs worth donating more than simply doing their best to save you. Now I dont know the actual practices behind this but I personally withdrew myself from donation last time I got my license renewed. It's just scary to think someone may decide I live or not based on my usefulness after I'm dead. Also I acknowledge I am ignorant of how proceedings during emergency events and after death are, so I am making this comment in Hopes somebody responds with worthwhile information on why or why not it even matters to worry about that.

This way everyone has multiple opportunities to opt in. And it takes nothing out of their way, as they already have to be there anyways
