  • Snatch Block! I want to take a moment to thank those of you who support Smarter Every Day on Patreon. I'd also like to point out 2 things about this video. #1. You'll notice Jeremy Fielding is in this video. He's the "Contraption Fabricator" that's started working with me now because of your support on Patreon. He's a great designer, father, and friend. You'll be seeing more of Jeremy around thanks to those who support at www.patreon.com/smartereveryday/ #2. If you'd like to 3D print the Snatch Blocks and pulleys we use in this video they are here: www.thingiverse.com/thing:4022579 #3. I really enjoy KiwiCo and I think you will too. I got them as a Christmas gift for my children years ago, and it was a huge hit. It was after that experience that I reached out to their team and asked if I could advertise for them because of how good it was for our family. I think you'll enjoy it too. www.kiwico.com/smarter It was 3 things... I ended up pointing out 3 things.

  • eons ago, when I went to school, they actually taught this stuff. They don't now. Why? No idea. Nice starter video, but you need to make another. good block and tackle or sets of snatch blocks will have different gear ratios (different size pulleys) to make up for the amount of rope being pulled through, so the block or set of snatch blocks always ride level. Now when you get into that, you're getting into complicated math... I don't do complicated math. By the way, I'm in Alabama too, not far from Tuscaloosa. People out here are very friendly and are often willing to help with broke down cars...whatever. I've always been that way, when I can I'll help somebody out, because I may need some help someday and what goes around comes around. For instance one day I had a flat tire.. okay no big deal right... wrong, I could not get the lug nuts loose even with a cheater pipe on the four way. A guy stopped to help, but even with the both of us on the cheater pipe, the lug nuts would not budge. All we managed to do was bend the fourway well twist and bend it. Luckily I wasn't all that far from a tire shop, so I limped it on down to the tire shop on the flat. They had to get an adapter and their big air gun they use on big rigs to get the lug nuts loose.

    • The basic trade off with pulleys is distance for less weight. the more pulleys you have, the less weight you'll feel, but you'll have to travel a further distance with the rope for every pulley you add. where does the weight go? Well in your example it would be transferred to the rope on the other side and the ladder.

  • When I learned about the math of mechanical advantage, (I think it was in a physics class), I learned you don’t even need pulleys. In the example of getting the Jeep unstuck, you can just connect the Jeep to the tree and then push on the rope in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the Jeep’s travel. It’s not a lot of advantage but it can be significant if you keep taking up the slack in the rope. (I actually used this to get a car unstuck.) Keep the videos coming!
