  • Snatch Block! I want to take a moment to thank those of you who support Smarter Every Day on Patreon. I'd also like to point out 2 things about this video. #1. You'll notice Jeremy Fielding is in this video. He's the "Contraption Fabricator" that's started working with me now because of your support on Patreon. He's a great designer, father, and friend. You'll be seeing more of Jeremy around thanks to those who support at www.patreon.com/smartereveryday/ #2. If you'd like to 3D print the Snatch Blocks and pulleys we use in this video they are here: www.thingiverse.com/thing:4022579 #3. I really enjoy KiwiCo and I think you will too. I got them as a Christmas gift for my children years ago, and it was a huge hit. It was after that experience that I reached out to their team and asked if I could advertise for them because of how good it was for our family. I think you'll enjoy it too. www.kiwico.com/smarter It was 3 things... I ended up pointing out 3 things.

  • For one summer (2018) i staffed a summer camp and I got given the job of running a rope bridge (Google military rope bridge). So I got trained to use a 3 pulley system to do rescues in case people fell between the stabilizers. we would lift them up and move them out of the way so the other staff would pull us in (I had a rope attached to my back) if you want to know more contact me on Twitter @thebananawolf64

  • Im a crane operator. Rigging is necessary knowledge. I love the fundamental explanation of simply how and why. We've discussed something with cranes called 'line pull'. It never made sense to me, and no one could properly describe it. Until now. Thanks a million. By the way... there are rules about which end the pin of a shackle goes thru. Simply... what goes in the bow of a shackle?. Thru the ropes bend? Or thru the eye of the snatch block? It matters. And situationally depends.

  • Destin, is it exact, 2x force for every rope pulling up? I would imagine you would lose some of that force in the friction of a pulley. I picture your small hands on portion of the video, using like 16 snatch blocks. If you put 2 lbs of pull on the beginning, would you still get 32 lbs of lift? I would think some of that pull would get lost in the friction?

  • fun topic! can go even deeper. Try to consider the implication of friction. The friction of pulleys and gears seems to sort of be inherently tired to the geometry, or I could be wrong, that's the fun thing about the subject, it can be counter-intuitive. But someone surely knows, if pullies had no friction would rope tension still decrease? Well it seems it has to because of the geometric leverage. I know the tension decreases with 2nd and more pulleys, but I havn't quite modeled it in my mind enough to see how that relates to the idea of friction and tension changes through a system. The fun part for me at the moment is trying to conceptualize how hypothetically frictionless pulleys would still decrease rope tension. Because for me intuitive if there was no friction how could tension be changed? Probably not that hard really, I will maybe edit my comment if I figure it out without cheating any time soon lol. But if anyone wants to tell that would be fun too. I think I already figured my question out years ago and forgot too, that's a common thing with me lol.

I actually laughed. I want a snatch block key fob to clip on my belt loop. Do you have any? Thanks for the video.
