The Great Resignation: Why Millions Of Workers Are Quitting

Americans are leaving their jobs in droves. In August 4.3 million Americans quit their jobs. While some people have left the workforce entirely, job security and better pay are top concerns for others. Dubbed "The Great Resignation", the exodus of workers has created hiring challenges for companies and left millions of jobs unfilled. More than half of U.S. workers surveyed said they plan to look for a new job in the coming year, according to Bankrate's August jobseeker survey. Some 56% of respondents said adjustable working hours and remote work were a priority. Working women have faced an additional burden, juggling childcare duties, virtual schooling and their careers. So, what does the realignment of the workforce mean for employees and businesses? And what steps should you take before quitting your job?

  • The media’s narrative is that there is a shortage of workers. There is no shortage of workers. There is a shortage of employers who are willing to pay workers what they’re actually worth

  • Legit a soldier going through basic training gets treated with better respect by his drill Sgt. than somebody working in fast food gets by customers and managers. I remember signing up for the army and while talking to the soldiers, one person asked about the stereotype of boot camp in movies of yelling, pushups, abuse, etc. The soldier said you just get used to it, I guess. I said I'm used to it from macdonalds and the soldier looked at me and said: "Honestly. I couldn't do that job, mate."

  • News flash: most employers are assholes. Doesn't matter if you're working at McDonald's or have a cushy white collar job. You ultimately go to work to make money, not friends. If you're boss is so toxic that you can't effectively work, then find another job. As for wages, once again find a better job. You know what happens when a company, especially customer service jobs, "raises wages"? They just simply raise the price of their goods, cut your hours or scale back your benefits. It's the nature of the beast; places like McDonald's are meant to have high turnover because it's a low skill job practically anyone can do. If you're counting on non-corporate McDonald's to be your career, you failed at life.

  • At the end of the day the more you ask for the more companies are just going to go into robotics. Robots cost less, cheaper to maintain, work 24/7, don't complain, don't take breaks, don't lie, don't harass or sue, and don't require any benefits. A companies entire purpose is to generate profit. They hire employees to do a job so the company can turn that work into progress. You might think you are high valued because you do the heavy lifting, you pull the lever, you do what you are told, but you are at the bottom because you lack the training, the skill, the talent, the vision that makes the company grow. You might think, "Without me they'll get nothing." I mean that's true in a sense that if no one worked the company couldn't make money. Yet at the same time, how the company works, how their systems and designs work that you just run back and fourth doing, was their ideas. It was something they had to create. Just like Fed Ex created a system to deliver packages that was cheaper and more efficient. Just because you are loading them into the back of the truck doesn't mean you are the driving force behind the idea, because left alone could you recreate what Fed has done? The logistics, the risk, the design, the planning involved? It might blow your minds that when a CEO gets hired they have to deal with all of this. Plenty of companies make pour decisions, or don't think far ahead, don't develop with the changing times, the technology, and are using paper in a paperless world in 2021 because they never upgraded and suddenly the fall behind. Yet there are some CEO's that understand the current and future markets and steer the company that way by appealing to their customer base, figure out how they tick, what they want, making good advertising, creating a product that fits their needs and interests, and finding ways to produce it cheaper, more efficiently or even better quality. You can't just do that without real vision. That's why some CEO's get paid millions, because they use their skills, talents, and vision to create prosperity for a company that generates billions in a single year. While you might be at the top of your game, might work hard, and come in on time, you might generate a few extra thousand dollars for the company because of your work ethic. I mean if everyone was a clone of that employee the company would see millions more, but a lot of it is by design and logistics and controls put in place that allow a company to thrive. Granted at the same time part of the vision of any company is to see their workers are paid well, trained well, and provided benefits that keep their moral high and spirits high to continue working for them. However those people are generally the skilled workers whom they don't want to lose to competing companies. When you are just at the very bottom, the grunt worker, with nothing to offer than a warm body that can move, you honestly don't have anything that millions of others could do. There are a supply of people and a demand of work. Not saying there aren't jobs that are total trash, completely underpay people for their efforts, expect lots of OT, have little to no training, poor management and the rest. I agree these jobs are total trash. I think waitresses and waiters should get paid a lot more, but I also think the tipping requirement is pretty abysmal. It's just a way for the employer to put the responsibility on the customer to pay the wages of their employees while still generating profits. It's so stupid. I avoided fast food and retail my entire life and never got any job doing it. I picked jobs where interactions with people was limited at best, with both the public and the other employees. I find that 99% of what makes jobs miserable is the other people in it. You always have customers who think they are royalty and demand the silver spoon. Then you got the employees who are just surviving and doing below minimal work while complaining about their work. 15 minute breaks becoming 25, 30 minute lunches turning into 50. 3 minute bathroom breaks turning in 20 minutes, smoking for 15% of the work day, a task that requires 3-5 minutes turns into 20 because they are on the phone. It's not everyone but anyone who has worked this low end jobs has literally worked with people like this every time. All it does is creates more work for you. Since they are scum of the Earth they find a way to get away with it and stick the blame on everyone but themselves. It's why I moved away from jobs like that and learned a skill so I could be more desirable to an employer, get better paying jobs, benefits, and work in a place I enjoy instead of hate. To do this you have to put a lot of work into yourself, a lot of risk meaning you might have to pay tons towards a real college degree and put effort into that. If you go to college and thinking hooking up and partying is what it's about. You are just extending your high school career by another 4 years and then you will be saddled with debt, living with your parents, and in total misery as you struggle to work some trash job because you are desperate to pay off student loans while still clueless about how to manage your finances. You will have loads of credit card debt, probably an alcoholic because of your college days, and smoke 2 packs a day because you found you can take more breaks because of it because you hate your life and your work. If you cannot invest in yourself, you cannot expect an employer to do it. Just like if you cannot love yourself, how can you expect someone to love you? Anyways, good luck with finding a job, doesn't matter what they do, even if they raise minimum wage and give benefits, you will still be at the bottom, find a way to climb out of that perpetual hell hole and get on with a better lifestyle. I had one person when I was in college say, "Man this is why I work at Wendy's because I am not smart enough to go to college." You don't need to be smart to go to college, it's why you go to college, to get the skills and training. If I was smart enough, I wouldn't need college and would just create my own concepts, but I'm no Elon Musk. (Just don't chase that useless art degree.)

Now they're seeing us QUITTING OUR JOBS and we are crying and complaining about jobs they'd be lucky to even HAVE. This shows other countries how selfish Americans are. To those people who are mad about this comment, 300+ pound chocolate eating fat guy quits his job because he doesn't like it takes up eating on his couch watching TV vs 90 pound foreign person who is starving, his family's starving, he has no job because there are none, no tv, not even a house but a hut. See why they already see Americans this way? Now were ALL quitting work because it's becoming a " trend"??? Wtf America?!

  • People, are you tired of your job? Stop caring about money. Realize how much of it you just throw to waste for temporary amusement. Learn how to make money while saving time. Learn how to invest and diversify your capital. Unfortunately we live under a financial system that incentivizes fast consumption and no saving and debt. Try not to fall into that trap by being greedy. Remember there are more important things in life. As long as you can eat and have a roof over your head, money is not really an issue. People are more important. Doing something you like and not being stressed 9 hours a day for 20 years, is more important. Taking care of your health and body and not fall victim to Big Pharma. No need to have a capitalist rich white dude mentality of owning everything and being the best. just remember life is one and it can be way better than you imagine if you just use your time correctly

The “Great Resignation” benefits those who keep their jobs and maintained their professional network. This cross-industry unspoken labor “union”. Only Hurts real unions. With prices of basic materials and goods rising… The “Great Resignation” to a “better” job is a facade. Welcome to global competition.

The employer is the beneficent slave master who is expected to take care of all of our needs.
