  • Nice to have some vindication that I was right in thinking Bruce wasn't making those classic "hee-yah" noises in real life. No joke I had actual arguments over this because I studied this guy to understand his impact on the movie industry as well as actors like Jackie Chan. Seriously the guy was good but he didn't have the voice manipulation skills to raise his voice that high. Jackie 1-ups him in that area.

  • 05:15 "So it turns out that those sounds they make Bruce Lee seem like he's making, were all added in the dub". Dead wrong, my friend! He was really him, and it was one of the things which majorly contributed to give him his mystique and make him unique as an actor. And there is proof to this too; in the newfound footage of Game of Death, which was raw and undubbed, he is seen performing using all the high-pitch animal screaming even more incessantly. All this is shown in John Litlle's documentary A warrior's journey.

  • JAckie Chan's fight scenes aren't necessarily fast-framed--- when filming the myth with jet li they were so quick they were literally told to slow down their moves. And that was old Jackie.

  • The most refreshing thing about Hong Kong movie fight scenes is that they "keep the camera rolling" for a couple of seconds at a time and not have a cut every few milliseconds to a) hide that the actors actually can't fight and b) give everybody an epileptic seizure.

  • When I think of Spike Lee doing Old Boy, all I can think of is when asked why he made a shot by shot remake of Psycho, Gus Van Sandt replied: "So noone else would have to." That's the feeling I get from both movies. They areboth made by directors who are great at their craft, but just kind of resigns to take one for the team. They knew the film was going to get made, they got the job and just wanted it to be over and done with. Also... You guys neglected to mention that the knife in Old Boy... was digitally added in post. So some poor match move CG artist had to hand track that knife over half of the runtime of the corridor fight...

    jmalmstenjmalmstenVor Monat
  • Okay so with the 'undercranking' thing with the cameras, Ewan Mcgregor and Ray Park had their lightsaber fight scene rehearsed to such a tee and got so good at it that they had to overcrank the camera to slow it down because they didn't think people would believe how quick they could go through the sequence. So that scene (Obi Wan vs Darth Maul on Naboo) is slowed down and it still looks so fast.

  • Bruce was making those screams. The only time he didn't do them was films he didn't complete, like Game of Death. But he DIDN'T scream in real life.

  • Oldboy is amazing and that fight scene highlights alot of stuff and like the HK film industry, changes alot of stuff for action shows. Gone were the days where the strong meets the strong and fight scenes are all over the place. Oldboy has a character who has 0 actual fighting background and with his time learning to "fight" (Those who have seen the show will know what I meant), he became "stronger" and more resilient. Besides, the shot during the corridoor fight just highlights that an underdog, when enraged and full of testosterone, can fight off hordes if he wants to, even if he has a fatal wound, just like any crazed fool who wanna live. That became a basis for many action movies later on and the still-chasing shot is what that's used in many action films later on, especially films like John Wick.
