My Mac Pro Desk Setup (2020)

Last year I shared my MacBook Pro desk setup and a lot of you seemed to enjoy and were interested in the way I worked on a daily basis with my MacBook Pro.
In this video, I figured I would follow up on the current status of my desk setup, which has changed quite a bit over the last few months.

  • Why do people find it so odd that someone that makes the video content for a Mac news site would be running a Mac Pro? It would make complete sense that he has every kind of Mac so that he can cover and review the full range of Mac products and accessories. That's how the site and this channel generates income - you know, what the Mac Pro is for...

    • @Michael Burry Sorry, I misunderstood you. Since your comment asked "does he need?", and then said "it only makes sense," I thought you meant it made sense that he needed it, and that he wouldn't have built a successful YT channel if not for his choice to spend so much on his personal vehicles. While I certainly agree that people who work in a field and are passionate about it will be more likely to own fancy stuff related to their field, I don't think that overspending on unnecessary fancy stuff is an inevitable byproduct of said passion. It's a decision everyone makes - to go with reason over excited emotions, or vice versa. Of course, Doug probably could've bought a Veyron, but settled on a "measly" Ford GT, so he might argue that he was showing impressive restraint :)

      ZZVor 3 Monate
    • @Z Exactly my point. Doug doesn't NEED the GT, it's just a byproduct of his interests overlapping his work.

      Michael BurryMichael BurryVor 3 Monate
    • @Michael Burry I respectfully disagree. Taking Doug as an example, he reviews an enormous range of vehicles. His personal ownership of one fancy car hardly gives him any valuable insights into his work, compared with the experience he gets from reviewing thousands of other cars.

    • It's kinda like how Doug Demuro writes for AutoTrader and does videos about cars... he can get around just fine in a $2,500 Honda Civic. So does he NEED a $200,000 2005 Ford GT in his personal garage? It only make sense, given it's related to both his work and his passions... It *totally* makes sense. I'm willing to bet that none of these people would have successful YT channels (that we are all here for) if their passions didn't overlap their work.

  • There's nothing wrong with a Mac site wanting to run a Mac pro. With that being said, noone should buy a base model Mac pro. It should only be bought if you intend to switch out the cpu/ram yourself. If not you're better off getting the iMac pro which will just destroy the Mac pro for the same price. Apple is also mighty cocky shipping the base model with a low end gpu. It was midrange at best 4 years ago. Let that sink in. The 5700xt should be minimum. Also funny how Intels srp for the 16 core is 2000$ which is offcourse at least twice as much as it should be. Apples charging you exactly 2000$ for the upgrade so you're essentially giving away a cpu for free. I can assure you that Apple ain't paying 2000$ for it either. Only get a Mac pro if you spec it out with Vega duos or need boatloads of ram in an apple environment.

Intel just had VGA svideo serial USB hdmi etc. I'm was here since war ibm/Xerox rochester ny vs apple history since 1970s 80s. Microsoft won. PC intel amd towers like two years ago just start using displayort thunderbolt from apple. PC towers now usb USB c hdmi displayports thunderbolt with integrated sound ports rather amd or intel cpus ..but pc mobo must be thunderbolt compatible. Same thing octane ssd pci with intel chipset mobo. No apple controls thunderbolt displayport tech...iphone ipad dont need wont work that's why not on them. Intel amd pc just borrowed with patent permission to pc market now....that's why it's on my amd CPU mobo.

  • Okay so, i've seen people claiming that the 12-core looks like the "sweet spot". I don't even recommend that one. I think, if you buy a Mac Pro, do it good so you don't have regrets later on. So, my advise is: 16-core (i think that is absolutely a great value and will go a long time with you!) 12-core nowadays, isn't really that much (on a pro level). Go with the minimum ram (32GB), or if you don't care and you have the money, go with at least 96GB. For the GPU, unless you are in the high end movie making/Hollywood production, i would go with the Radeon Pro Vega II that has 32GB. Which is plenty for most of us. And, even better, if you can wait (like i'm doing), go with the Radeon Pro W7500X with 16GB. That GPU will also be able to put out USB-C gen 3.1 (instead of the 2.0 USB speeds at this moment). Now the SSD, go with the minimum of 1TB, i know, you can put your own PCIe ssd's in it. But i would still go with the minimum of 1TB. Now, again, like with the ram, if you have the money, go with 4tb or even 8tb (which is what i'm going to go for). The after burner card, again, if you are in big house movie production (Hollywood alike) AND/OR make use of ProRes‑ / ProRes RAW-codecs, then yes, do it! You will see the benefits of it. I think the only thing remaining are the wheels option. Again, me personally, i'm going to get this. I thing it's great if you need to move the mac pro around, certainly because it's so heavy! Anyway, this is my opinion and this is how i would config it.

    • @Mike Little yikes m8, Intel just certified an AMD board. They made it royalty free a couple years ago now and was never a hardware limitation on other platforms as far as I know since it can be implemented through add in cards for example. As we saw it with the asrock boards. Point is that the Mac pro can technically get a threadripper/epyc upgrade in the future if Apple decides to design the motherboard and OS around it. That would certainly increase the value of the machine drastically.

      Cjon wickhamCjon wickhamVor 4 Monate

And yes, Intel did develop Thunderbolt in conjunction with Apple, but Intel controls it - this is why Thunderbolt is not found on the ARM based iOS/iPadOS Apple devices.

    • ARM cpu or amd cpu Apple plans to move on and leaving intel...for lower power plus lower cost laptop macs and towers imacs. Also work along radeon gpu since apple dont do nividia GPU and drivers. ARM cpu in note 8 iphone coming to pc and laptops mobile. Intel business will be reduced to server with epyc rome... pc/ laptop will come nvidia or radeon gpu instead intel gpu or cpu..and amd or arm cpu. PC will be still threadripper/ryzen or arm cpu...not sure i9 i7 i5 but probably lose. As stays xeon/ epyc be server.

    • I press the space bar with my index too, I don't like having my hand cramped, that's quite tiresome and less ergonomic compared to having your hand in more flat position, which does makes your thumbs not reach the keyboard, (my thumbs just floating above the trackpad) unless u adjust the hand/wrist every time, which I personally is so much faster typer with pressing spacebar with the index finger.... by far. Tho I can't use ergonomic keyboards because I learned to type fast, not based on which fingers belong to which key like in school, so the "split" in ergonomic keyboards usually wrong for me.

  • Beautiful machine but that "monitor stand" is horrid. Ergonomically, to relieve neck strain, you should be looking down at your monitor, not up. Also, you're not supposed to use your index fingers to hit the spacebar. No wonder you have health issues!

    Richard ForesterRichard ForesterVor 4 Monate
    • I have to agree about the height of the monitor. I get the utility of having space underneath, but (and you can look this up if you like) the normal way we humans position our heads when we are sitting comfortably upright puts our eye line at a slightly downward angle. The best ergonomic placement is thus to have your eye level close to the top of the monitor. If you hold your arm out strait (parallel to the floor) while seated, your fingers should be pointing close to the middle of the screen. I'm used to making sure my desk is set up in that way, and If I have to sit at a desk where the monitor is up on a stand, it gets pretty annoying pretty quickly.

      ftlPhysicsGuyftlPhysicsGuyVor 4 Monate
    • @MacRumors The very top of the monitor should be at eye level. The mid-point of the monitor should be about 20-25 degrees below that horizon. This is why people propping their monitors up on paper stacks or monitor stands have bad neck pain. They are "craning" their neck. As far as the keyboard goes, ok, if you are trying to figure it out, that's fine, but you shouldn't be hunting/pecking like that. It's bad for your fingers/hands/wrists. I'm not trying to be a jerk here. I'm just trying to point out some really bad ergonomic form.

      Richard ForesterRichard ForesterVor 4 Monate
    • The monitor should be eye level, which it is because the desk can be height adjusted and I’m typing strange because this keyboard is different.
