Motorola Razr 2019: Is This $1500 Folding Phone From The Future Or The Past?

The re-imagined Motorola Razr is part flashy technological feat and part practical portability perk, sold at a premium price despite some forgettable specs. If you’re thinking that sounds familiar, then you much have been around for the first Motorola RAZR launch back in 2004! Despite its high price, that RAZR product family would go on to sell 130 million units over the next four years, going down in the history books as the most successful flip phone of all time. Can Motorola capture lightning in a bottle again? I recently got a sneak peek at the company's flexible-display flagship branded simply "razr" - and while my enthusiasm for the foldable category doubtless colors my impression, I came away hopeful for the Motorola brand name for the first time in four years.

MrMobile's Motorola Razr 2019 Hands-On / Motorola Razr 2020 Hands-On was produced following three hours with a Motorola Razr review sample at a Motorola press event in Los Angeles. Preproduction device running pre-release software. • This phone will only use android 9, operating system. Not the android 10. It won't be 5G compatible, battery life it's short (compare to an Samsung's Galaxy S10 plus). But it looks like it doesn't have a earphone jack.

  • Dear Motorola, Three critical things - *1) Get the price down.* - At a grand or slightly under, it will sell. $1500.00 crosses into the 'bling thing' niche market. Expect the person holding it to also have keys to a Tesla P-Series in their pocket. *2) Form factor vs. battery life* - this is a foregone conclusion that should have been addressed via wireless charging. Packing it with a portable charging cradle that has a 5000+ mah battery inside it probably won't help address point #1, but it makes a hell of a lot more practical sense when you consider the user experience against that asking price. *3) What were you thinking with that camera?* - a huge chunk of the market (predominantly female - hint, hint) has been eliminated by this rudimentary camera setup. There's already a bump, for crying out loud - put something decent in it, and do it *before* you offer this in pink. I look forward to a 2nd generation RAZR that addresses these issues - which is virtually guaranteed by Apple's planned abandonment of a physical charging plug (making wireless charging 'cool' again), and Motorola's recovered R&D expenses via sales profit from the 1st gen RAZR (money doubtless spent by early adopters with more dollars than sense).

    • Also - Android NINE? Just why? And why is the interface using Android soft buttons when you guys designed the Smart Navigation Bar to work *using the fingerprint sensor* in *THAT EXACT SPOT?*

  • This is the first phone that has interested me in years. My current phone is 4 years old, and I've seen no reason to run out and replace it. Now I'm certainly not going to pay $1500 for a phone, but give this a year or two, and an affordable used option will certainly be available if not a cheaper new one. So this is definitely on my radar. I loved my original RAZR back in the day, and have missed the flip form factor ever since.

  • Very intriguing design. Opening price might be a little bit high, but early adopters are often ready to pay a premium... I guess in mid 2020 it will drop below 1000 bucks, and then it starts to get interesting for more people. I believe that 600 bucks would be the sweet spot for this. Maybe with a cellular contract it will be cheap enough. I'm looking forward to get one as soon as it becomes affordable. Let's wait and see.

  • nice phone, and very compact. I don't know about the price on itself loose from model and brand. Two years ago most of Belgians stand in line for an Apple that cost about 1000,00 euros. I don't think today we still have a 1000 bucks to spend on a smartphone. There were other 'security' reasons why people wanted so badly to spend a 1000 euros on an Apple phone. That is all gone today. A budget of 600 euros for a smartphone gets exceptional. Still very sleek machine.

  • +MrMobile While the shortcomings of the original Razr are true phones where used for a very different purpose in 2004. Calling, texting, and some photo snapping was about all you could do. In 2020 phones are completely different altogether. Trying to sell a phone part enahnced form factor, part nostalgic piece is a tough pill for $1,500. Maybe this will sell well, Im not sure how though when specs are the main selling point of handsets these days.

  • 1500 bucks , oh mine got , doesnt seam to be a flag ship material , i mean , doesnt take just one innovation to get to that position you need to have software package to match , at least if im gonna be a buyer , something , its a lot of money , i mean , PS4 is like 400$ , PS5 should be around 500$ , that is PS4 and PS5 and another flag ship phone , for this phone .
