Mom Who Depends On Daughter For Nearly Everything Says She Feels Like A Burden

A 56-year-old woman who claims she has arthritis, depression, and other ailments depends on her 24-year-old daughter for nearly everything.
Dr. Phil uses the power of television to tell compelling stories about real people.
The Dr. Phil show provides the most comprehensive forum on mental health issues in the history of television. For over a decade, Dr. McGraw has used the show's platform to make psychology accessible and understandable to the general public by addressing important personal and social issues. Using his top-rated show as a teaching tool, he takes aim at the critical issues of our time, including the "silent epidemics" of bullying, drug abuse, domestic violence, depression, child abuse, suicide and various forms of severe mental illness.

A healthy diet rich in green vegetables will help w the weight, swelling and pain...she will be a NEW PERSON IN NO TIME thus enabling her to work etc. But habits are hard to change and she seems to be in "hopelessness"mode

  • I do find this a bit frustrating. EDS IS a debilitating illness for many. There are different types. Plus it often is accompanied by another condition, such as POTS, NCS, MCAS, etc. These conditions often go undiagnosed because Doctors do not know how to look for them. When doctors hear hoof beats, they are trained to look for a horse, while in actuality you have a zebra. I’m not saying this woman isn’t guilty of manipulation or mooching or whatever... but I am saying, if she has EDS (often EDS and the other illnesses above are “self diagnosed,” in the sense that most doctors don’t know what’s wrong, so you have to research for yourself, then research specialists to confirm or not confirm that you have it... that’s just how it is with conditions that don’t have a lot of research out there... ) then the woman IS quite probably very unwell. I personally do not have EDS, but I have friends who do. You’re talking random dislocations that happen so often you learn to pop them back into place yourself. Or if you have vascular EDS you’re talking internal bleeding. You’re also talking issues with your organs, because EDS affects the tissues in your body. That’s what it is, a connective tissue disorder. I have POTS and MCAS, and a friend who has EDS, MCAS And POTS.... any one of those illnesses can be debilitating on their own. Then throw them all in there and you’ve got a really rough road to walk. I think dr. Phil could’ve researched EDS better, realizing that it is often misdiagnosed as something else, REQUIRING a patient to advocate for themselves. Having a debilitating illness without a diagnosis is a very miserable road... I am glad she is at least on the right track, having been told by a Medical Professional that she likely has this.

  • “I haven’t been diagnosed officially yet.” “My nurse told me I have it.” “I googled it and I got the criteria.” “My nurse said that I only show symptoms, but I do not have a copy of it to show.” “Actually, I was officially diagnosed with it, but no paperwork to show.” SO WHICH ONE IS IT??

    Naveya LoftonNaveya LoftonVor 22 Stunden
  • Alright so this mom is clearly narcissistic and lazy but as someone who knows the struggle of finding a diagnosis for a severe illness, I kind of pity the mom in that regard and hate how Dr. Phil completely devalued her symptoms because she wasn't "diagnosed" While the mom is very clearly faking, it is a lot harder to get diagnosed with things then it seems.

  • Dr. Phil is a bully. Everytime someone calls the show out on something he has this look on his face like hes trying to scare them into submission. When she said she doesn't remember the show asking for the paperwork, the look on his face was crazy. I get it, she could have been asked, but so many people on this show have called them out on stuff and he acts odd every time.

  • I have EDS, and it sucks. I don’t condone the mom depending on her daughter at all. However, to play devil’s advocate, I will say, it can be hard to get a formal EDS diagnosis. I searched for answers to my pain and other symptoms for years! I even went to The Mayo Clinic, but they diagnosed me with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. A few months later, I saw a geneticist who diagnosed me with EDS. I saw a second, unaffiliated geneticist for a second opinion, and she confirmed my diagnosis.
