How Humans Lost Their Fur

We’re the only primate without a coat of thick fur. It turns out that this small change in our appearance has had huge consequences for our ability to regulate our body temperature, and ultimately, it helped shape the evolution of our entire lineage.

  • The running endurance is more likely to be migratory travel to and from annual harvest sites. Tubers here in the spring. Mushrooms in the summer in the forest, Late season grain in the plain and berries in the bush country for fall and winter tuber and bean resources. The hunting scenario makes little sense to me since we can't outrun predators without a massive head start, and our range far surpasses the distance of any animal besides a horse. So unless we evolved to hunt horses, animals of some stature in most civilizations, then one must be open to additional evolutionary options to the hunting scenario. I ran down and speared one water buffalo, now I am going to keep running down the rest until they are all dead? I guess. Woolly rhinos are said to have had anthropological aid in their demise. There is the Tarahumara example after all, little hunting there.

  • We lost all that fur to chase things (which also had fur I may add) for a few hours to keep cool but at night or autumn/winter time we just lit fires to keep warm? They are some massive leaps of faith in regards to our evolution. I mean surely it’s a bit more complex than that? It’s not like “oh hey ugg, where’s all ya fur gone?” Oh my great great great greeeeaaat grandad did a lot of running back in the day so here I am 🤷‍♂️

  • Why do many mammals have fur? I believe it is to keep mosquitos away. and even humans can sometimes feel when a mosquito lands on your arm cause hair is like an antenna. Even a mammal that is about to get grabbed by a predator gets a split second warning by the barrier of hair surrounding it's body. Time to react...get away. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

    desotopetedesotopeteVor 12 Tage
  • Also, hair on our heads aren’t necessarily “leftovers” from having fur, as many animals have hair on their heads even if they still have their fur.

  • 20 years ago, I watched a science show saying we lost our hair because we had become semi-aquatic. Now they are saying we lost it because we were persistence hunters. Next decade it will be something different. PHDs always need some new topic to do their dissertations on, so they come up whatever novel theory their imaginations spawn. But that doesn't make it history or evolution; it's just an idea.

    • I did a little digging and I think I know what you’re talking about, but it was a hypothesis that was taken down almost immediately. I’m not surprised you didn’t hear about it. A sad truth about the way we consume media is that if any scientist makes a bold claim and later revokes it and says they were wrong, no one pays attention to their revoke

      Tinymon31Tinymon31Vor 13 Tage
    • I’m 100% you heard the science show wrong because homo sapien is definetely not semi-aquatic. Plus, it would take a very long stretch of time to evolve that, and I believe this evolution would be far more well known of it was true

  • Hmm, ever notice that lots of mammals that live in the water have no fur? What if we went hairless due to being a water primate. Look at our nose, why is it shaped like that? Perhaps walking upright was to keep our heads above water? I think more research needs to done on this.
