Decoding the Instagram Beauty Standard

Influencers have now become the new beauty standard.
But what exactly is the new beauty standard? Well, I decided to find out for myself. I made a list of the Top 100 female Instagram stars purely based on following. Then I came up with 22 attributes that each woman would be judged on. These included things like:
Hair color
Hair length
Neck length
Face shape
Body shape
Eye color
Clothing size
Flatness of stomach
Lip size
Eye size
Nose size
Skin color
Chest size
Prominence of butt
Age
Height...etc
After a couple weeks of gathering data and categorizing data, I can tell you that there is most definitely a formula and a specific beauty standard that the 100 most followed women on Instagram adhere to.
Watch the video to find out the results and to see me get photoshopped into a Top 100 Female Instagrammer!

    • @Sadaf yeah no I completely agree :)

    • @Miss I'm not sure what Kim's background is but Ariana is Italian and Selena is Mexican (but because her skin is not tan year round she gets dubbed in the white category). I'm just saying this comparison is not scientifically correct because you can't compare people's Instagram popularity on solely their looks when there are obviously external factors (i.e their careers/status and popularity, etc.) that are affecting the results.

      SadafSadafVor Monat
    • @Sadaf yeah I so agree, also I thought it was a bit rude because it kinda suggests that the singers and actresses haven't earnt their followers through their work/talent? Also I don't know if it's because we do have more nationalities and half cast people now? (in America I mean) so more dark hair and more dark eyes, compared to previous decades. I don't know the ethnicities of Ariana, Selena and Kim, but I wouldn't say they were white Caucasian

      MissMissVor Monat
    • @Miss it's also not accounting for the fact that it was all celebrities, a better comparison would be the top accounts who aren't A-listers and compare those. Or people who have 20 million+ followers just for looks, etc. Cause in those accounts there is a little more variety and a little more mixed. It just so happens that these women that we Stan for their careers happen to have brown eyes and brown hair.

  • it's interesting that the standard is Caucasian because a lot of Caucasians are trying to be less white LOL. Tanning is still a HUGE trend (which I think is ridiculous... why do we have to act like there's something wrong with pale skin? Why can't we just be the color we were born?) I mean jeez, look at Ariana Grande's skin. She used to be much lighter in Victorious. Same with Demi Lovato -- her disney channel days she was pretty pale, now she's super tan. Although I think both of them have some Latina descent. My point is mainly that light skin seems to be out and a dark tan shade is in. I'm guessing this stat was based on the overall 100 people, cuz otherwise I don't see why Cassie would have her skin lightened in photoshop when it seems so many influencers are doing the opposite.

  • I think being Asian will become a global beauty ideal at some point. Korean women are way ahead in taking care of their skin, and Kpop is a global phenomena. Asian women have a lot of the "best of the both worlds" from white and black ethnicities, so I think Asians will be held as the highest standard of beauty in the future.

  • I think you forgot to consider the most important factor of all... Regardless of how they look, all of the top instagram influencers are huge celebrities outside of instagram, and none of them became famous through instagram. When I think of instagram influencers, I think of people who got known on instagram and use instagram as their main job. If the person is a singer, actress or reality star, instagram is just supplemental to their career. I guess you didn’t include that factor since it’s not possible to suddenly make yourself super famous.

    Eyeland NinjaEyeland NinjaVor 3 Monate
  • the only thing is, in the top 100 most of them are actors and singers etc. They are followed for their exposure on mainstream media, not necessarily beauty. It would be more accurate to solely look into instagram models imo.

  • Interesting experiment. I think the 'instagram' girls are extremely fake looking. While they have some pretty features, the overdone makeup, overdone everything, is unattractive. Your personal 'makeover' made you look like the 'dime a dozen' rest of the girls on instagram. It was not attractive... your real beauty is lovely. I don't do trends or celebrities, or instagram. I grew up in the 60's, so maybe I am not 'with it' but I think less is more. Play up your own natural beauty with light makeup, and accentuate the prettiest features of your figure, without going overboard. I don't want to look like everyone else. You did say however, that the average age is 22...
