  • Andrew, Bill and Bert I don't know if you will see this or find it interesting, but I have a unique marital situation. When my wife and I first met I was making 2-3 times as much money as she was, we were just dating then, but I paid for most things, knowing she made significantly less than I did. It wasn't a sexist thing or anything like that, but it was just fair. I made better money, and volunteered to pay most of the time, although she did pick up quite a few checks even then. We moved to NYC and both got new jobs, although she took a few months to get a job. We were living together and in the mean time I paid for everything, again only fair. But after that the roles reversed. She started making fantastic money, and the job I had started to suck, and I started job hopping chasing her money. I wasn't jealous, I have always been happy for her, but I needed to feel like I was contributing equally. I do all the cooking and cleaning at home, although in quarantine she has stepped up to the plate like a champion in that regard, but normally I do it all. I never complain about it, because I make less money, and enjoy cooking and keeping things tidy. is super easy. Not sure what women make the big deal about it for? I do it all in an hour or so, granted I live in a 700 sq foot apartment in NYC. I know Bill has a joke about that, stay-at-home mom's. I think about that sometime as the 'homemaker' of the house, and remind myself it's not that hard if I think about complaining about it. When we go out now, since she got the great paying job, she picks up the tab so much that I have resorted to calling ahead or sneaking the server my card when she is in the bathroom. I didn't mind at first, because it refreshing to have the shoe on the other foot, but I did start feeling emasculated because she would stop me from paying or even splitting it when the check was dropped, often when the server was there. I have to wonder, if that is how she felt when I did it for her. I thought I was coming from a place of fairness, but maybe she found it degrading to have someone paying all the time. Hope you guys find that interesting if you read it. Love your stuff.

  • My wife makes a good deal more money than me. It's never been an issue, whatsoever. I mean, if you don't provide anything, that's one thing, but it's honestly never even occurred to me to feel emasculated because she earns a higher salary than I do. We don't have children though, if that makes a difference.

  • Bill's right about not keeping everything you earn but most well off people always spin the same yarn. "Well, after taxes, after this, after that etc, you're only left with a fraction." Guess what? That's the same for everyone, they just end up with a lot less money than the well off guy. Good on you, if you make good money but don't make out you're the only one with expenses.
